$5bn expansion of home battery rebate will slash energy bills for millions of households
Even more Australian households will have the opportunity to slash their power bills for good after the Federal Government announced a $5bn expansion to the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
The program has already enabled 175,000 battery installs since it began in May this year – exceeding all expectations and clearing the way for an extra $5bn investment that will enable 2 million battery systems to come online by 2030.
In addition to the 2 million households, business and community organisations that will directly benefit from these battery installs, millions more Australians will benefit from the flow-on effects. The batteries will help take pressure off our national grid by absorbing more of the excess energy generated during the day and storing it to be used at night, reducing the need for more expensive coal and gas generation.
Renew Australia for All also welcomes the government’s decision to alter the settings of the rebate from May next year to reduce the subsidy for installing super-sized systems above 14KWh, which will allow even more households to participate and slash their bills with solar and a battery.
Now we call on the government to make the policy changes and investment needed to ensure that everyone – including renters, apartment dwellers and low-income households – can access the same bill-slashing technology, so everyone can be in healthy homes that are affordable to heat and cool.
Renew Australia for All – an alliance of more than 80 organisations – has been calling for an immediate $5 billion investment to help those most in need access rooftop solar, batteries, electrification and efficiency improvements so they can take back control of their energy bills now and for good.
If every household in Australia were able to access efficient & electric upgrades, as well as solar and batteries, the total national savings would amount to $23.6 billion annually.
